Celebrity engagements

They started dating just nine months ago but Scarlett Johansson and French journalist Romain Dauriac are already engaged. Now, I have nothing against quick engagements but considering Scarlett split from her first husband Ryan Reynolds after just two years in 2010 (divorce was finalised in 2011), I’m surprised at her rush to tie the knot again. Then again, Reynolds is already on to wife number two, (aka Blake Lively), so maybe she was feeling left out?

Also, People magazine (aka the mouthpiece of celebrity publicists) is speculating that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are engaged. It hasn’t been confirmed yet but when something gets printed in People, it’s a sign of things to come. Ashton’s still working out the details of a messy divorce from Demi Moore so I just find it baffling that he would want to rush into another marriage before his first is even officially over.

I get that celebrities live in a strange bubble that us mere mortals could never understand but don’t they have friends they can turn to for advice? Is there no one who will say, ‘Ah Ashton, maybe wait until your divorce comes through!!’

No one wants to end up like poor Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was married nine times and is now stuck with Prince Frederic. This charmer TMZ every time she has a health scare and didn’t even tell her that her leg had been amputated!

Celebrity hypocrite: Alec Baldwin

New pictures emerged over the weekend of Alec Baldwin physically attacking a paparazzo, ironically taken by the other paps present.

While it’s been claimed the photographer in question [Paul Adao] was ‘aggressively pursuing’ Alec and his wife Hilaria, I find it difficult to have much sympathy for them, and not just because Alec is a renowned ass. We all remember that ‘rude, thoughtless, little pig’ voicemail right?

After marrying Alec, 29-year-old yoga teacher Hilaria landed a job as a ‘lifestyle correspondent’ for TV show Extra. [Wonder how she got it?]

The couple also gave the show a number of exclusives including the news that she was pregnant, the sex of the baby and even a tour of the tot’s nursery.

And how does Extra describe itself? Extra has the hottest celebrity and entertainment news, photosgossipscandalsvideosgamesmusicmoviestelevisionstar sightings and more!’

So, I’m not sure if the Baldwins realise this but all of those photos, videos and star sightings that Extra is so proud of……………. they come from the paps.

I totally get that being surrounded by photographers every day when you just want to go out for a walk is a nightmare but people like Alec and Hilaria who court the attention and in her case, works for a company that relies on pap pictures, don’t really have a leg to stand on.

Which also makes this recent tweet of hers completely hypocritical:

BET Awards LA

Last weekend in LA was all about the BETs. Rather than just the usual awards ceremony and after- parties, this year there was a whole weekend of events, parties and concerts (the BET Experience) leading up to the ceremony on Sunday.

I covered the red carpet at Debra Lee’s Pre-BET Awards celebration at Milk Studios in Hollywood on Saturday where Debra (Chairman and CEO of BET) hosted a dinner for stars including Nicki Minaj, Michelle Williams, Nelly, Jordin Sparks, Ashanti and lots more.

Everyone was in a pretty chatty mood with Michelle talking about a Destiny’s Child reunion, Blue Ivy, what she thinks of Kim and Kanye’s baby name etc.

Jordin as ever was gushing about Jason Derulo and talking about working with Whitney Houston on her last movie Sparkle and Omarosa Manigault went into great detail about her fiance Michael Clark Duncan’s death. Red carpet wouldn’t be my first choice place to talk about it but if it helps her cope, I suppose it must be a good thing.

After the red carpet, I dashed off to the Staples Centre where Snoop Dogg (he thankfully seems to have dropped the whole Lion thing), Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole and Miguel played to a packed out arena.

I missed the openers (J. Cole and Miguel) as I was running late but Kendrick Lamar was incredible. Maybe it’s because he’s a local guy or maybe he’s just fantastic but the atmosphere was insane and he totally got the crowd pumped for the main event.

Snoop was back to his Dogg best. Not only did he play all of his biggest hits, which even someone like me who’s not really into hip hop recognised. He also brought out a host of stars to sing with him including Dr Dre, Wiz Khalifa, Future and Ace Hood, to the delight of the crowd. Most of them were smoking spliffs on stage and one overeager fan sitting beside me tried to get involved by lighting up his own (and was soon told off by staff).

It also didn’t hurt that I had amazing seats thanks to a lovely PR. Although I couldn’t believe it when I saw the price on the ticket was almost $350! Who pays this amount for a gig?

Last up was the BET Awards themselves. As ever a lot of the main attractions (such as Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Nicki Minaj, Robin Thicke etc) didn’t do much press but there was still some good stuff.

Highlights had to be Nelly, who would only refer to himself in the third person during out interview. He was coming out with gems like ‘The thing about Nelly is’ and ‘Nelly’s gonna change the face of music’. It made my day it was so ridiculous. And when he told me his new album was going to be ‘off the chain’, I asked him to elaborate and he just said ‘OFF…. THE….. CHAIN’. Made standing on a red carpet for four hours totally worth it.

Also as someone who (wrongly) wrote off Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose’s relationship as a bit of a publicity stunt, I now take it all back. They were two of the nicest celebs I’ve ever met. She was so great, friendly and open and he was fantastic. He was incredibly sweet (which is not what you expect from someone who sings about getting high) and they couldn’t stop gushing about their baby son.

Snoop Dogg as ever was hilarious and just so charismatic. He’s just so chill, happy to chat to all the press and takes everything in his stride.

2Chainz was predictably wearing two massive chains and there was some serious bling going on the whole weekend. Chanel seems to be the jewellery of choice for rappers!

Only disappointment of the weekend was Columbus Short (Harrison from Scandal) who was rude, condescending and just an ass. Even though he was only a presenter and the weekend was really nothing to do with him, he couldn’t even bring himself to be polite. Who knows why he even stopped to do interviews. The usual rule applies here, the bigger the star, the sounder they are.

Anyway will post some of the more interesting quotes once I get a chance but in the meantime, enjoy my new favourite Wiz Khalifa!

Vodka party in Beverly Hills

On Tuesday I was invited to the Svedka Splash of Summer party to celebrate their new vodka flavours, Orange Cream Pop and Strawberry Colado.

The bash was held at an amazing estate in the Beverly Crest neighbourhood, high up in the hills over Beverly Hills.

The view alone would have made it worth the trip but the grounds were decked out with everything you need for a great party. Along with a DJ spinning awesome tunes such as my current favourite Blurred Lines and bars serving the new vodka flavours, there were also snow cones (made with vodka obviously), amazing canapes, giant jenga (for the big kids) and vodka bowling.

We seemed to have missed out on the orange dress code though as most of the celebrities there, including Julianne and Derek Hough, Gossip Girls’s Jessica Szohr and Rob Kardashian’s ex-girlfriend Adrienne Bailon, were all wearing the same colour.

Otherwise it was a mix of your typical LA scene, gorgeous model/singer/actor types, all standing around looking suitably bored and hoping a model scout, record boss or casting executive would spot them and give them their big break.

Thankfully my friend and I aren’t trying to make it in any of the typical LA industries so we had no qualms about acting uncool by smiling, dancing, drinking and the worst LA offence…eating!

24 Hour Plays LA

There’s always something fun going on in Lala land. Last weekend, I went to the 24 Hour Plays at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica. The event – where six short plays are written, rehearsed and performed in a 24-hour period – has been going on in New York for years but this is only its third time in Los Angeles.

While I had my doubts about the quality of the plays, I was really impressed with what they managed to achieve in such a short time frame, particularly Bear Witness and Something About Lily, my two favourites.

Maybe it’s just that I still have a soft spot for Seth Green from his days as Oz in Buffy The Vampire Slayer but he was perfect as Build A Bear employee Gregg who has a romantic encounter with dippy bride to be Maise (Lucy Punch).

I also loved Something About Lily, which achieved the (almost) impossible and made me love Wilmer Valderrama. The always wonderful Anna Camp was excellent as the ditzy woman torn between her cheating fiance Adam (Wilmer) and her bumbling criminal ex-boyfriend Derek (Skylar Astin), who tries to rob the liquor store they all find themselves in.

Organisers Montblanc and the Urban Arts Partnership put together a stellar cast including Melanie Griffith, Jason Biggs, Molly Sims, Anna Camp, John Cho, Jamie Chung,Michael Ealy, Jack McBrayer, Ashley Fink, Seth Green,Ian Harding, Wilmer Valderrama, Sasha Alexander,Skylar Astin, Samantha Barks, David Krumholtz, Rosie Perez, Lucy Punch,Romy Rosemont, Hannah Simone, Alia Shawkat, Eddie Kaye Thomas and Tracie Thoms.

Two students Emanuel De Los Santos and Cedeshea Oliver, were also chosen to take part in the productions.

And of course the whole event is for a charitable cause (Urban Arts Partnership) so everyone left their egos at the door. No tantrums, no diva behaviour. Almost unheard of for an event involving so many celebs!

Afterwards everyone decamped to the fabulous Shore Hotel for the afterparty where Rosie Perez kicked things off by taking over the DJ Booth. Melanie Griffith brought her son and daughter along. Ashley Fink twerked it on the dancefloor with Alia Shawkat and Gillian Jacobs while Tracie Thoms took over the karaoke.

Fun times!

Channing All Over Your Tatum

Channing Tatum continues to do no wrong. Check out this hilarious music video from White House Down co-stars Channing and Jamie Foxx, along with Jimmy Kimmel and cameos by Olivia Munn, Gabourey Sidibe, Miley Cyrus and Kimmel’s frequent partner in crime, Matt Damon.

The song first aired during a special edition of ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ in February but it’s back with an official music video and for anyone who doesn’t know what the title means, Channing [who is one of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever interviewed] explains it through rap.

‘Going Channing on your Tatum makes the babies be born’

Morning Joe anchors ridiculed by Russell Brand

I never really had an opinion on Russell Brand until I attended one of his comedy shows for work and was impressed with his performance. He’s obviously hilarious but what struck me most was his intelligence, something he showed off to devastating effect when he recently appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.

As a journalist, I don’t necessarily agree with his constant moaning about the media (people like Russell need the media to publicise their movies, TV shows, comedy tours etc and his aversion to tabloids hasn’t stopped him writing articles for The Sun) but these hosts deserved everything they got. From their unprofessional introductionHe’s a really big deal… I’m told this. I’m not very pop cultured, I’m sorry’ to talking about Russell as if he wasn’t there, even I can’t help but side with the celebrity over the media on this one!
