Veronica Mars: The Movie

Veronica Mars fans [and I include myself in that category] woke up today to the news that the long awaited movie could finally be about to happen. After a couple of false starts, creator Rob Thomas has come up with the idea of having fans fund the film on Kickstarter  offering various rewards including set visits, premiere tickets and getting Kristen Bell to follow people on Twitter in return for different donations.

The goal is $2 million minimum in 30 days and if this is raised, the movie will shoot THIS SUMMER and be released in 2014. Warner Bros, who own the rights and have been unwilling to invest in the project until now have agreed to cover the rest of the cost of distribution and promotion.

So what’s the plan? According to Rob:

Life has taken Veronica away from Neptune. In the years since spoiling Keith’s chances to be reelected sheriff, Veronica hasn’t taken a case. But something big is about to bring her back home and back to her calling. My goal is to include as many of your favourite characters as possible. It is, after all, time for Veronica’s 10-year high school reunion.”

I’m not quite sure what to think about this whole Kickstarter idea. After all $2 million is chump change to Warner Bros and marketing and distribution costs are sure to surpass it. I think it is less about the money and more about gauging fan support. After all the TV series ended in 2007 so it wouldn’t be too surprising if apart from the core faithful, many casual fans would have lost interest.

However, the page has only been up for a few hours and it’s already passed $1 million [and counting]….

Many commentators are saying, “what exactly do the fans get out of it? Why don’t they get to share in the rewards if they’re funding the movie?”.

I think most fans would agree that the movie is the reward, after all this is what people have been hoping for since cancellation.

And, if the big screen version is half as awesome as this campaign trailer which brings back Kristen (Veronica), Jason Dohring (Logan Echolls), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars) and Ryan Hansen (everyone’s favourite douche Dick Casablancas), it’s going to be amazing!

Plus anything that wipes the memory of the subpar season three and proposed season four pilot can only be a good thing.
